EVENT FULL --- The Alva Loop: introduction to Hill Walking and Navigation in the Ochils - Sun, 1 Jun 2014 - 10:00

Family Friendly Event

Join us for a moderate introduction to hill-walking for people who would like to try this increasingly popular activity but haven't quite gained the confidence to buy a map and just go for it! Experienced walk leader, Gavin Clarke, will give guidance on the basic principles of navigation using a map and compass, with emphasis on how to keep safe and avoid going astray when the weather closes in.
Note: this route will pass by the cultivation terraces under scrutiny in the talk on 9 June

Moderate-to-strenuous. This walk is around 6-7 miles, with an ascent of around 600-750 metres. It should take around 4-5 hours to complete. Hill walking kit generally to be included as a minimum: 1. Layered warm clothing, e.g. fleece, mid and base layer, non-cotton trousers if possible. 2. Waterproof jacket and overtrousers and, if possible, gaiters and waterproof boots with decent treads and non-cutaway heels (if not available, be prepared to get your feet wet). If wearing off road trainers be sure that the treads are in good condition as we shall be climbing and descending steep grassy slopes which, when wet, can be very slippery. 3.
